The Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring Trailer

My Favorite Book: The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien

To me, The Lord of the Rings is not just a fantasy novel; it explores many themes and tropes that are present in the works of more mainstream authors. The Lord of the Rings explores friendship in the face of impossible odds; the experiences of soldiers returning from the war and personal heroism. These themes are present because of Tolkien's own experiences; his experience during World War I in the battle of the Somme in 1916; and his academic interest in the heroic Old English Beowulf, the saga of the Norse Eddas, the Icelandic sagas and the Finnish Kalevala.

The movies were visually stunning, but the book, or trilogy as they have been divided into, is much better, giving the reader real insight to one of the twentieth century's greatest authors. Here is a slideshow presentation on Tolkien's life.

William Shakespeare

William Shakespeare (baptised 26 April 1564; died 23 April 1616) was an English poet and playwright, widely regarded as the greatest writer in the English language and the world's pre-eminent dramatist. He is often called England's national poet and the "Bard of Avon". His surviving works, including some collaborations, consist of about 38 plays, 154 sonnets, two long narrative poems, and several other poems. His plays have been translated into every major living language and are performed more often than those of any other playwright. His works often explore the human condition, that is, the range of human emotions and experiences.

My favorite quote: "I am myself indifferent honest;
but yet I could accuse me of such things that it
were better my mother had not borne me: I am very
proud, revengeful, ambitious, with more offences at
my beck than I have thoughts to put them in,
imagination to give them shape, or time to act them
